Idaho Falls Author Dr. Debu Majumdar will give a slide show presentation “A Journey to the Source of the Ganges River,” based on his novel Sacred River: A Himalayan Journey at Marshall Public Library, Pocatello on Saturday, June 19 at 7 PM. The novel has won the 2016 Somerset Literary Award in the category Adventure/Suspense Book Summary: Sacred River is an adventure to the source of the Ganges River. It is a journey of various kinds – for some it is a mystery, a gold heist; for some it is a travelogue, a hike to the Himalayas; for some it is a collection of mythological and folk stories from India and for others it is simply an uplifting story. The novel weaves three stories that initially flow independently but come together at a Hindu temple on the Ganges River in the Himalayas. An Indian-American journeys to the mystical source of the Ganges, searching for peace and renewal; an illiterate farmer makes a pilgrimage to fulfill his lifelong wish; and an Indian Charity has a plan to steal gold from the temple to uplift the people of India. Pilgrims, thieves, tourists, and events flow toward the temple independently with their individual stories. On the surface, the action centers on the treasure heist – but underneath, this is a story of a quest for peace in life nurtured by Indian mythological and folk tales, unconditional spiritual devotion, and intercultural romance. A Himalayan journey that will touch your soul. The novel has been widely acclaimed “This sharply observed and richly imagined combination of travelogue, intrigue and philosophical contemplation results in a truly stimulating tale.” (Barbara Lloyd McMichael, Bellingham Herald) “Mystery, love and beautiful scenery wrapped into a terrific journey.” (Jim Porell, Pine Plains, NY) “A brilliant novel, which gives a wonderfully vivid flavour of India with all its idiosyncrasies and contradictions.” (Barbara Hall, Nibley Green, Gloucestershire, U.K.) About the Author Born in India, Debu Majumdar received a doctorate degree in physics from Stony Brook. His first book, a creative non-fiction, From the Ganges to the Snake River was published by Idaho State University; it interweaves Indian culture with North-West American reality. He has published 4 children’s books (Viku and the Elephant series) set in village India, that illustrate universal themes such as friendship, perseverance, preservation, and surviving bullying. Sacred River is his first novel - written from a background of India’s ancient heritage. Details at Debubooks.com.
